Could a new federal proposal put access to your favorite Pine Barrens places at risk?
Proposed legislation would study waterways in the Mullica watershed for possible Wild and Scenic designation. It reaches beyond the Mullica River to include the Batsto, Wading, West Branch Wading, Oswego, and Bass rivers, plus numerous tributaries, 23 named waterway segments in all.
Open Trails NJ supports protecting these waters. But after years of fighting to preserve access in Wharton State Forest, we’re skeptical of advancing another process without clear safeguards for responsible public access.
Designation could complicate road maintenance or become another avenue for access restrictions. How will existing recreational uses be protected and who will have a voice?
A study is not a final designation, and closures are not a foregone conclusion. But calling it “just a study” doesn’t answer those questions.
Public access deserves clear protections before this moves forward.
